The design process: 4am Project logo

We recently completed the update of the 4am Project logo, working with Karen Strunks a Birmingham-based photographer and founder of the international photography project. The aims of the project are “to gather a collection of photos from around the world at the magical time of 4am. Everyone can take part and join in! All you need is a camera. We want to see what you see at that moment in time on that one day.”

The brief

The basic requirements were for a revamp rather than a complete redesign of the logo. Karen was keen to keep the existing colours and a similar format, to allow her to add the new identity into the existing website framework without any upheaval. Apart from those stipulations, we were given scope to create a conceptual approach that we felt suited the project.

Initial sketches

As with all our identity and logo design work, we started with rough annotated sketches to get our ideas down. These sketches are a quick way of communicating and recording visual approaches that emerge from the initial brainstorming session.

Development

Any interesting concepts that result from our initial sketches are then worked up on screen in monotone. This is our preferred way of working, as it ensures the logo is equally as strong in single colour as it is in full colour. Early concepts include a retro flip clock as seen through a fish-eye lens,  a camera lens as a clock face and the digital alarm symbol.

The stronger of these logo concepts are then fine-tuned, paying particular attention to typefaces, reproduction at smaller sizes and use of colour before being proofed to the client. In this instance, the client asked for minor amendments to be made to two concepts before making her decision.

Final design

The finished logo has received positive feedback from the project’s supporters, and has been awarded ‘logo of the day’ by logorium.
